What can be donated?

The Summerside Salvation Army Thrift Store is delighted to accept most items that are in good condition, but we have some restrictions for the safety of the dedicated team of employees and volunteers who sort through the donations we receive.

What about computers or TVs, monitors and other electronics?

As a general rule, we cannot sell computers or TVs. However, if you have any electronic device in perfect working condition that is less than 3-5 years old you can contact the store to check about your donation. If not, check the nearest Island Waste Management Corporation site (the nearest site to Summerside is here) for more information on disposing these items.

Do you accept donations of large items like couches, chairs or dressers?

We do! However, a good rule of thumb for large donations is to never donate items you wouldn’t buy yourself. The Salvation Army has to pay large fees to have items removed from the property that are not saleable, which leaves us with fewer resources to dedicate to those who need them most.

Where and when can donations be dropped off?

During business hours

(9:30 am to 4:30 pm Tuesday to Saturday)

Please drop your donations off during store hours. DO NOT leave donations on the deck or at the back of the store after hours. Items left outside get damaged due to the weather or get stolen by individuals after hours.

Do you accept mattresses or box springs?

No, we do not. Check the nearest Island Waste Management Corporation site (the nearest site to Summerside is here) for more information on disposing of these items.

What do you not accept?

We appreciate the thought behind every donation! However, some items are not suitable for reuse. Any item that you would feel uncomfortable buying for yourself will not make a good donation and should be disposed of properly. Some examples include used socks or underwear, damaged footwear, anything broken, games and toys with missing pieces, etc.

Thank you for thinking of us for your gently used items, your donations make a difference!

What about books?

We welcome book donations, but some books are not suitable for sale:

  • Please do not donate reference books (like textbooks) that are more than one year old.

  • We do not accept encyclopedias and dated books such as year-in-review collections.

  • Vintage books should be donated to an organization that specializes in those books.

  • Books that are worn out, torn, or stained should not be donated. Please refer to your local guidelines for proper recycling procedures.

The best books to donate are those in good condition, including modern novels, cookbooks, training guides, non-fiction books, and children’s books.
